Huîtres de Trousse-Chemise
The Ultimate Oyster Experience
This place is hard to describe—you really have to experience it yourself. But here’s a brave attempt:
Let’s start with the location—absolutely stunning!
It feels like you’ve arrived at the end of the world. Far from the hustle and bustle (yes, it still exists), right by the bay of Fier d’Ars (perfect for a beautiful sunset), surrounded by salt marshes (great for bike rides), and next to a nature reserve full of unique birds that treat you to a little concert while you enjoy your oysters.
Equally important are the oysters: here, you get to eat the freshest oysters ever, straight from the nearby oyster beds.
Don’t let the appearance of this place scare you off. Even the humble building and simple wooden picnic benches are part of the charm—the simplicity makes the experience even more intense.
Hop on your bike to explore this stunning part of the island and enjoy the route through the many salt marshes. You might almost get lost. There’s no internet here, so no Google Maps… yikes!
By the way, you can also reach this place by car via the nearby golf course. Not nearly as fun, though…
Our favorite time to visit is in the evening, around aperitif time. Order a platter of oysters, a bottle of cold Sauvignon Blanc, and wait for the sun to set into the sea. Just be sure to check if they’re open in the evening, as they’re closed in the evenings outside of high season.
Not an oyster fan? You can also order a delicious charcuterie board.
